The One Piece saga has a ton of incredibly unique and fascinating characters for fans to unravel, many of which come with a range of mysteries – and some rather interesting One Piece theories as well. Zoro’s left eye has brought a flood of questions among fans, leaving many wondering why Zoro’s eye is closed in One Piece, as well as when he will open it.

Although there are still plenty of loose ends in figuring out why Zoro’s eye is really closed, there are a few hints as to what could really be going on. Stick around to find out everything you need to know about why Zoro keeps his left eye closed in One Piece, as well as if there’s a chance he will open both of his eyes sometime in the future.

Roronoa Zoro, first introduced in Chapter 3 as an antipirate on the quest to claim Pirate bounties, in order to survive in the vast seas. He is the second member of the crew and the first to join, doing so in the Romance Dawn Arc. Right hand man to none other than the future Pirate King. Does this man need an introduction?

I’m up to date in the One Piece anime but not in the manga, is there any information about Zoro’s closed eye? Can’t he open it because of his scar there, or maybe he is hiding his real power withholding his one eye closed? How did he get his scar? Maybe in a final training fight with Mihawk?

Why is Zoro’s eye Blind?

Another popular One Piece fan theory is that Zoro’s left eye was closed to help maintain control over his Asura powers. The crux of this theory is that Zoro is “possessed” by the Asura demon as a result of his use of cursed swords throughout One Piece.

Other theories suggest that the scar is made intentionally to master the ability to sense the things/people around. It looks like Kenbunshoku Haki is an ultimate ability of swordsmen to fight without using sight sense. So losing sight might be A KEY to AWAKEN the ultimate Swordsmen powers. Zoro might have intentionally cut his left eye to awake this ability.

What Happened To Roronoa Zoro’s Left Eye?

Eiichiro Oda said that he wanted Zoro to be a one-eyed swordsman from the start of One Piece, but he did not reveal how he lost his eye. But fans believe it’s because of training with Mihawk during the time skip. A fan theory suggests that Zoro has Conqueror’s Haki, activating with his left eye and that’s why he has decided to keep it closed. There are many fan theories about Zoro’s left eye.

Let’s get this out of the way first. Zoro did not lose his eye during the time skip. Narratively it doesn’t add up that every strawhat came back better than ever and Zoro’s the ONLY ONE who gets a ridiculous handicap like this. Zoro’s not that special that for some reason he needs to be permanently nerfed for the rest of the story like this. Also his training isn’t in any way shown to be more dangerous than anyone else’s. Plus narratively, losing body parts isn’t even a sign of danger. Shanks losing his arm for example isn’t a sign that his encounter with the Lord of the coast is the most dangerous thing he’s ever faced. Losing body parts such as Kyros losing his leg exist entirely for emotional weight and given no one’s two year training has been given any time, it’s doubtful there’s an emotional story brewing in Zoro’s training. Lastly the scar above Zoro’s eye doesn’t mean he lost it. Rayleigh and Shanks exist for example but also Zoro has scars on his legs and chest and never lost any organs despite those scars.

Zoro’s eye has been closed with a large scar across it since we’ve seen him after the timeskip. The only other notable swordsman to have the same scar is Silvers Rayleigh, however his eye is opened.

In traditional pirate history, pirates wore eye patches in order to see inside of a dark ship. When they’d enter the ship, they would switch their eye patch so that the eye that is better adjusted to the dark.

The first idea is that, after Rocks was defeated, Rayleigh trained another swordsman to counter the powers of the Yami Yami no Mi. That swordsman being Hawkeyes Mihawk. After witnessing what took place at Marineford, he went back to train. Only to find a more worthy opponent for Blackbeard. Mihawk scars Zoro and then trains him to be even better without it. So when the time comes that he must face Blackbeard, he will be ready.

Rocks D. Xebec likely was the user of the Yami Yami no Mi. When the Roger Pirates faced off against Xebec’s crew, it’s more than likely that it wasn’t their first clash. In order to counter the abilities of the fruit, Rayleigh had to keep his eye shut until their fight. When opened, Rayleigh could not only see through the darkness, but cut through it too. With the help of Roger and Garp, Rocks was defeated, Rayleigh was titled the Dark King, and he never had to keep his eye shut again.
